Detailed Description of Weekly, Wire and Start & Sit Rankings

Over the past few weeks a few folks have asked about the differences between the various Consensus Weekly, Smart, Wire and the Start/ Sit Rankings.  Following is a brief description of each.

Weekly Consensus Rankings

Consider these rankings the true “wisdom of the crowds.”  We gather 25+ weekly player rankings from large, medium and small sized fantasy football sites, combine their rankings and produce a single Consensus Ranking for the 6 key fantasy positions (QB, RB, WR, TE, K and D/ST).

Weekly Consensus and Smart rankings are generally available starting Wednesday and updated throughout the days on Thursday and Friday and finalized on Saturdays.

Weekly Smart Rankings

These rankings ONLY include the rankings from those sources we have found to be most accurate over the past 2 years.  The same process as with Consensus Rankings applies – we gather the advice, combine rankings together and create a single set of Smart Rankings.  You will also notice that next to most players Smart Ranking is a green or red number.  These numbers represent the difference of opinion from the Smart and Consensus Rankings.  For example, if Randy Moss is the Consensus #2 WR for Week 3 but the Smart Rankings have him at #5 you will see a -3 next to Randy’s name.  The purpose of this tool is so you know what the best sources are saying vs. the aggregate of the crowd.

Weekly Start & Sit Rankings

Each week more than 20 reputable sources produce advice commonly referred to as “Start and/ or Sit.”  This advice is different than the rankings listed above in that the sources share which players they feel have a particularly good or bad matchup for the week.  Most sources don’t state the obvious like start Peyton Manning or Adrian Peterson (how smart would that be) and stick to players you may be having a hard time deciding over and that’s what we’re after here. In cases where sources do state the obvious we exclude those from our Consensus Start & Sit rankings.  Players ranked higher have been mentioned more often so if a player is ranked #1 for Start advice then he’s the most commonly mentioned player among the experts.  If a player is #1 for Sit then he is the most commonly recommended “sit” by the experts.  The Smart Start or Sit Rankings work the same way the Weekly Rankings do above.  We recreate a list of Start/ Sit rankings based ONLY on the advice of the most accurate sources.

Weekly Consensus and Smart Start & Sit Rankings are generally available starting Thursdays and updated through Friday, Saturday and finalized Sunday morning.

Weekly Wire Rankings

We gather and analyze wire pickup advice from more than 25 sources each week.  The Consensus Wire Rankings provide you with a consolidated view of the experts opinions on which players to consider picking up.  Like with Start/ Sit, we’re not looking for the obvious plays here (like pick up Ray Rice if he’s available).  We’re trying to help you find a player that can make an impact AND is available in most leagues.  We do a fair amount of sifting through this data to make sure the players appearing in the Consensus Wire Rankings are actually players many of you could pick up.  The #1 ranked player on this list is the most commonly mentioned pickup among the experts.  The Smart rankings work the same as they do with the Weekly Rankings and Start/ Sit – we recreate the rankings using ONLY the advice from the sources we’ve found to be most historically accurate for wire advice.

Weekly Consensus and Smart Wire Rankings are generally available starting Monday afternoons and updated on Tuesday, Wednesday and finalized Thursdays.
