“You’ll have to be quick…I’m good at that” – from a conversation between Jenny and Kevin from The League

.

Did you know that in Week 3 of the 2010 season 3 of the top 5 top fantasy producing players (Vick, Collie, Moore) could have been found on the wire in most leagues as late as Week 2?  Read that again, 3 of the top 5 fantasy point earners could have been YOURS…for NOTHING!  As most experienced fantasy players will tell you, mastering the waiver wire early in the season is critical to season-long success.

Last year we wrote a very popular post called “Waiver Wire Greed – 3 Little Known Skills to Mastering the Waiver Wire”  This post focused on understanding a few key concepts that aren’t readily talked in the fantasy football world that will make a difference in your ability to dominate the waiver wire.  Well, it’s a new season and with a few weeks behind us it’s time to revisit these skills and add some new information that should pay dividends today and for weeks/ seasons to come.

Before we reveal the waiver wire hack you must know for 2010, let’s revisit the timeless concepts you need to be familiar with:

.

  1. Get the best possible information – as quickly as possible
  2. Be bold, think differently
  3. Act fast

.

By Sunday evenings most of us may have our ideas on which players to pick up.  However, the majority of us also want the peace of mind that the moves we’re making check out.  For this peace of mind most of us go to the experts – the fantasy football gurus that follow this stuff for a living.

If advice is what you’re after (or just a sounding board) then the hack you must know is which sources provide the quickest advice.  We’ve crunched the data for the first few weeks and found the following sites to provide the quickest wire advice so far in 2010:

.

The Best – Sunday Night

Lesterslegends.com - generally post from 8:30 PM ET to 10:30 PM ET

.

The Next Best – Monday Morning/ Early Afternoon

ProFootballWeekly.com - generally post from 2:30 AM ET to 10:00 AM ET

FFGeekBlog.com - generally post from 9:00 AM ET to 2:30 PM ET

Walterfootball.com - generally post from 8:00 AM ET to 1:00 PM ET

.

What About ESPN or Yahoo!?

You’ll notice that none of the “big guys” like ESPN, Yahoo! or NFL made the cut.  In fact, none of them even cracked the top 8.  Now, for those of you who have had any experience working for a big company will know, there is always red tape and protocols involved in getting things done.  So while I can’t be certain of this, my hunch is that the big guys want to put out their advice out sooner but the approvals, etc. cost them at least a day or two.  For them it’s not a huge deal – after all they have millions of people visiting their sites anyways.  But for you this delay could mean the difference between winning and losing next week.

So, take this hack and use it.  You’ll be sure to at least increase your chances of getting the next breakout player.
