Can you really help me be more competitive in my fantasy football league?

Absolutely. We provide information that can increase the quality of your decision making by 40% or more. We can do this because among other things we track which Web sites provide the best and worst advice. If you're listening to the wrong sources you could be costing yourself wins. And, we provide this information is a MUCH easier to use format. A simpler site means you can spend more time on intelligent analysis and less time on finding stuff.

How can you calculate how accurate a fantasy football source is? Seems pretty hard to do.

Well, your right. Determining which Web sites provide the best advice is pretty challenging which is why it's taken us 3 years to perfect it (read what the Wall Street Journal thought about us last year by clicking here). We've got nothing to hide about our methods but also realize you don't want to spend a few hours with the intricate details of the statistical modeling we use. Here are the general steps:

.

  1. Identify the most commonly used fantasy football sites on the Web that provide consistent advice around the draft, weekly rankings, wire and start and sit. Since we've been at this for a few years we are now gathering and analyzing content from more than 50 sources on the Web and in print (some you know and others you may not). We don't just stick with the big guys since there are many other quality sites providing good advice. For a list of sites we are currently analyzing click here.
  2. Once we gather content each year or week we add it to a database (as you can imagine this is a LOT of work - especially because it has to be accurate).
  3. To determine accuracy for let's say weekly rankings we use a mathematical model based on deviation - just how close was a sources projected weekly rankings to the actual outcome of the week. There are a number of ways to determine accuracy and we could have a healthy debate about it but the bottom line for us is this - we want something accurate but as simple as possible to work with (simple = consistency and consistency = better data). Adding too many variables or coming up with our own acronyms with crazy calculations are just difficult to understand - for us or anyone trying to interpret them. Some times in life things don't need to be super complicated to get the desired result which is why we always opt for the optimal method with the least amount of potential challenges.
  4. We rank the deviations of each source against their peers to determine who is the "most accurate."
  5. We roll this data up into our site, reports and other forms of communication.

In a nutshell that's how it works. If you have a hankering for the nitty-gritty details then just shoot us a note and we'll be happy to share the details with you.

Why did you change your name from FantasyXPERT.com to PlayThisGuy.com?

We want the site to be easy to use and easy to remember. After feedback from our users we decided that Play This Guy! was a much more memorable name and did a better job of telling people what we do.  Additionally, we were told by users and friends that there are just so many darn sites with the word "fantasy" in them that it's confusing.  For more about the name change click here.

What's the difference between "Consensus" and "PlayThisGuy! Smart" rankings?

Think of "Consensus" rankings as an average. To create the consensus rankings we combine advice from more than 40 well-known fantasy football sites then average their rankings and come up with a consensus ranking. "Smart" rankings go one step further...since we track which Web sites provide the most accurate player ranking advice we take the top 5 most accurate sites and create an average ranking based only on their opinions. You can find consensus and Smart rankings inside the site for the draft and throughout the regular season. This is pretty amazing stuff if we don't say so ourselves and can really help to give you a leg up on your competition.

Why do you guys charge for this information?

Believe it or not, this is actually one of the questions we most like to answer. Spending time in the San Franciso/ Silicon Valley area over the past 10 years has taught us a great lesson...to provide a great service and stay in business you need to MAKE MONEY. I know, novel concept right? But, believe it or not many fantasy football sites - even ones that have been recently released think they can survive with some advertisements on their site and a "people will pay us later on" approach. Well, the ship has kind of sailed on that business model. Those chosing this path end up burning lot's of money waiting for the users to start paying "someday." Users are impacted because at some point the company stops innovating, stops coming up with new ideas and ways to improve the service and it just dies a slow death. The number of Web sites that make this approach work is infinitesimally small (how many Facebooks are there?).

We don't want to die a slow death - we want to build something that will stand the test of time. We want to move the industry forward and to do so requires money. Sure, like any business we want to make a profit but we also believe we have a bigger calling - to improve how people play fantasy football. So, with your help we will continue to spend money on our service, innovate and continue with our mission.

Besides, we feel that spending $10 or so bucks a season for the first-of-its-kind information and tools we provide is a great value and advantage. We hope you agree!

There are lot's of fantasy football sites out there how is your site different?

We provide smarter fantasy football advice in a much better wrapper. The first thing we do that's different is gather advice from more than 100 well-known fantasy football sites - we don't rely on just 1 or 2 fantasy football "experts." Secondly, we crunch the data for you so you know things like which sites provide the best player ranking, wire and start & sit advice. Thirdly, we provide tools that make decision-making simpler and easier. To our knowledge there isn't anything like it on the Web.

What type of players use the site?

Our users range from high-stakes players to the casual just want to kick my friends butt type of player. Anyone that plays fantasy football can benefit from what we do.
